Lecture 9: Heavy Metal Pollution
Heavy metals such as Pb, Cd and Hg are major pollutants in soil and groundwater. Here, we will
outline the geochemical behaviour of these elements to understand what processes limit their bioavailability.
You should be able to outline:
the speciation (pe-pH diagram) of Cd, Pb, Hg, and As.
the chemical processes (sorption, precipitation of insoluble minerals) that limit the aqueous
concentrations of each element.
