Lecture 5: Thermochemistry: Entropy and Free Energy


Here we introduce the concept of entropy and the second law of thermodyamics. Using this, we can predict when chemical processes will occur spontaneously. We define a new thermodynamic quantity, called free energy, that enables us to conveniently determine when a process is favored.
